~~~~~~~~~
Wearing his favorite shirt and jeans, Ninomiya Kazunari traveled his way from Tokyo to Yokohama to visit someone he holds dear. Stopping by to get a bouquet of lilies to a nearby flower shop, he walked for a few minutes and stood in front of a cemetery.
Today marks the third year of his loss.
His graveyard wasn't as far so he simply strolled along, reminiscing the memories the two of them shared together. It felt comforting for him but at the same time it hurts.
He feels as if his heart is going to break to tinier pieces than it was before.
In the end, the only thing he can do is remember or probably pretend he’s by his side: believing that his presence continues to live on – no worries though, he’s sane.
Arriving at his destination, he quickly gathered a pail of water to clean his boyfriend’s grave then placed the lilies neatly into the place for flowers together with some incense. He joined his palms and closed his eyes, praying for the peace of his soul and maybe the hope of reuniting with him in the next life.
“I wish you were here. I really miss you…”
Satoshi.
“Even after such a long time, I…” he whispered, tears rolling down his cheeks. Visiting him like this always makes him cry and as much as he would want to hold back the tears since Satoshi wouldn't want to see in such a state, he can’t do it.
So the tears simply kept on falling like rain.
----------
Sunset has begun, counting its way towards night time when he received a mail from his friends, Aiba and Sho, inviting him for a drink. Saying his goodbyes and the desire to visit him again soon, he left the graveyard in slow steps. He was deciding between taking a bus or a train to meet them. Stopping by a board showing a local map, his eyes studied the roads to see which is faster.
“Um, excuse me…” a hesitant voice made him turn.
“Do you know where the ride to Nishi-ward is?”
He was speechless.
She looks beautiful and well, she’s a typical girl but he had never seen her before here. She had hazel eyes that looked sleepy and chubby cheeks. She’s tanned but the color seemed fair. He went back to stare at her eyes.
There’s something about them that gave a tug to his heart.
atching himself with mouth slightly agape for a while now, he replied with almost a stutter, “I-I’m heading there too, in fact, we can wait for the ride together.”
She looked to the ground, her fingers fumbling a button of her brown coat, “My boyfriend doesn't want me to go near anyone.”
His heart fell down from what she said but ignored it and laughed, “Relax. We’re going in our separate ways anyways, trust me. And don’t worry; you’re not only one who has a boyfriend.”
“Oh I see. Where is he then?”
Not bothering to ask why he looks so composed (girls should at least be surprised, shouldn't they?) he answered her while looking at the sky, “He died. It’s been 3 years really.”
She bowed to him, “Ah I am deeply sorry for that.” There’s something in her eyes again that makes him all flustered – this is confusing.
“I-It’s okay, come on, it’s this way.”
------------
They were both on the train now. Unfortunately, they were standing as the seats are all occupied. He looked at the window; he sees her reflection, and then looks the other way.
Why does he suddenly feel like this?
Is Satoshi trying to imply something?
He slapped himself mentally – no! Didn't you hear? She has a boyfriend, idiot! Stop making me feel like this!
The fact that he’s attracted to a girl is already weird in itself. His heart belongs to only one and no one else: Satoshi.
So why?
He was too delved into thinking that he didn't notice the train grew crowded with people pushing him towards her.
hat blush is creeping its way back to his cheeks again.
Trying to breathe, he managed to inhale a part of her scent. She smelt of…
The sea.
It’s something that he’s not very fond of but had grown used to it to the point of addiction because of his Ohno. Preventing himself from smelling further he found a distraction: conversation.
“So…what’s your name? I’m Ninomiya by the way.”
“Ninomiya?”
“Yeah, but you can call me Nino. How about you?”
It took her a few seconds to reply. She bit her lips and then finally voiced out a name, “S-Satoko.”
“What a cute name.”
She smiled shyly, his heart skipping a beat.
“I never saw you here before. Are you travelling?”
“No, I just happened to pass here, that’s all.”
Nino nodded; he rarely finds people who just pass by this place by chance. That rare possibility somehow happened today.
Subsequently, the train stopped at the assigned station. “Ah! We’re here Satoko-chan.”
They both stepped out of the train with relief washing over Nino; it was hot inside but it was too hot.
It wasn't because of her, it‘s the people. Yes, the passengers in the train.
Satoko bowed one more time, “Thank you very much Nino. I’ll be going first then. See you around.” She smiled for the second time and walked away. Nino waves and observes her a bit more before disappearing to the crowd.
Her long brown hair sways gently side by side running with no posture at all and then she halts, and then walks. Her posture is quite slouched and the way she walks with her heels seemed awkward but he surmised that there could be women who are like that. Seeing her form one last time, he mumbled, “See you around too…Satoko-chan.”
----------------
“Tadaima!”
“Okaeri, you’re late.”
“Sorry to keep you waiting!” Satoko uttered, taking her heels off her feet without delay.
“It’s okay. Now go get changed.” The man who was younger than him said and patted Satoko’s head and gave her a set of clothes and added, “This wig should go too.”
Her voice then changed from a woman-like to a deeper one. “It’s alright; I understand why I should do this.”
He removed the wig from his head and carefully stuffed it inside a bag. “It’s tiring going out as Satoko but I’m happy to return to Jun-kun as Ohno Satoshi.”
The man called Jun beamed and pecked him on the cheek, “I’m glad. It’s just that…”
don’t want them to find you, not even a chance.
“Just what?”
“J-just that those people I talked to you about from before may find you.”
Satoshi only nodded and went to their room to change. Closing the door, he rubbed off the makeup and lipstick, removed the long eyelashes from his eyes and then, his current clothing. Afterwards, he flopped to the bed and heaved a sigh.
To be completely honest, he’s growing uncomfortable with it: dressing up as a girl every time he goes out of the house. But to prevent Jun from panicking – in which is somewhat scary – and seeing that worrisome face of his, he complied.
He continues to this for half a year now, after begging Jun to let him at least go outside.
His mind then thought of the man he met today, Nino. He was practically the first stranger he met and talked casually (it’s different from the usual people he always sees around). Actually, he had never been into Naka-ward here in Yokohama before but it’s as if his feet had a mind of its own and simply wandered around the place and apparently, he got lost.
He never thought of stepping into the place too because Jun forbids it for unexplained reasons aside from the one he talked about: certain people finding him.
He wonders briefly if Nino would do the same.
Wait, hold up.
What is he talking about?
He just met him a moment ago and yet…
It’s like he had met him from before.
He laughed at himself for such a thought. The only thing he can remember is his moments with Jun, his family and…
othing else.
He should be happy but it bothered him for years, even up to now. He didn't dare raise questions about his identity to his boyfriend.
He heard a knock. “You okay there Ohno-san? Are you sleeping again?”
He put on his shirt and jogging pants, “N-no of course not. I’m coming out.”
As Ohno came out of the room, he was welcomed by a sudden hug. “Is there something wrong?”
He felt Jun shake his head as he buried his face near his neck.
“No, just feel like it. I just want to confirm that you’re really here with me.”
“Why wouldn't I be Jun-kun? We've been together… always.”
He hugged him tighter, “I know that. Every hour, every minute and every second of the day.”
He doesn't know how to act those words. It always surprises him. He hugged back instead and heard him call out.
“Satoshi?”
“Hmm?”
“Don’t…don’t ever leave me okay? Promise me.”
Silence.
“I promise.”
Jun lifts his head and presses his lips on Ohno’s. Ohno shakes the doubts he had for today by responding to his action.
It is better than him being all tensed every single time he leaves him.
Jun takes the initiative to deepen their kiss.
Indeed, it is better…even if the outside world knows him as the girl, Satoko.
